Why course setting is still such a hassle
In training, gate distances are mostly estimated: pacing it off, sliding ski lengths, drilling by eye. If you want real numbers, you reach for a tape measure or a laser. The tape needs two people, snags in the snow and tests your patience on steep pitches. The laser only measures once the pole is already in – if the distance is off, you drill again. In fog, snowfall or against the light, it stops working. Hardly anyone measures the offset, even though it shapes speed and load just as much as the distance does. And once the course is set, there is no record of how it was set.

DIGITAPE: the digital tape measure for the hill
DIGITAPE is a GNSS measuring device for alpine ski course setting. It uses RTK – the same method used to measure gate positions digitally at World Cup level. Switch it on, turn on the hotspot on your phone – the device connects by itself and pulls in the correction data. At the gate, press the button once. From that point on, the display shows distance and offset continuously as you ski to the next gate. You only drill when both are right.

Five steps to a finished course
1. Switch on
Switch on the device and clip it onto the drill. That's all the preparation it takes.
2. Turn on hotspot
Turn on the hotspot on your phone. DIGITAPE connects automatically and receives the RTK correction data – no menus, no setup.
3. Set reference
At the first gate, press the button once. The position is saved and becomes the zero point for the next measurement.
4. Measure, then drill
Ski to the next gate. The display shows distance and offset continuously – you drill exactly where both are right. One press saves the gate as the new reference.
5. Download report
Once the course is set, download the full course report: all gates, distances, offset, gradient and the course map.

1. Internet on the slope: DIGITAPE pulls its RTK correction data over your phone’s hotspot – no mobile data, no centimetre fix.
2. RTK coverage at your training and race venues: the correction service is not available everywhere. Check your area before ordering on the u-blox PointPerfect coverage map.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is DIGITAPE?
With RTK correction data, accuracy is in the range of one to two centimetres. DIGITAPE shows the direct gate-to-gate distance – as in World Cup course reports. The display shows the current accuracy at all times – so you always know what you're relying on.
Does it work in fog and snowfall?
Yes. DIGITAPE measures via satellite positions, not line of sight. Fog, snowfall, dusk or backlight make no difference – exactly where a laser gives up. RTK also works in the trees or on steep slopes in most cases. Where trees or rock faces block a large part of the sky, accuracy can drop briefly – the display shows this immediately.
What do I need besides the device?
A smartphone with hotspot and mobile data – on the hill, not just in the valley. DIGITAPE connects automatically at start-up and receives the RTK correction data through it; without internet, there's no centimetre-accurate fix. The correction service is not available everywhere: check your training and race venues on the u-blox PointPerfect coverage map before ordering (u-blox.com/en/pointperfect-service-coverage).
How do I carry DIGITAPE while setting a course?
On a bracket on your cordless drill – the tool that comes along anyway when you set the poles. No extra hand needed, nothing extra to carry.
Can I measure several courses in one day?
Yes. Each measurement is saved as its own session and can be downloaded as a separate report – training course in the morning, race course in the afternoon.
Can I rebuild a course later?
Yes. DIGITAPE saves every gate position and guides you back to each gate next time – to the centimetre, even after grooming. That way you rebuild proven training courses or a race course exactly.
Does DIGITAPE help me meet youth race rules?
Yes. You see every distance while you set and can adjust it to the rules for each age group. The course report then documents all distances – as proof for the jury and your coaching staff.
When is DIGITAPE available?

Which countries does DIGITAPE work in?
RTK correction data comes from the u-blox PointPerfect network. Coverage includes all Alpine countries – Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia, Liechtenstein and Andorra – plus Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal, the UK, Ireland and the Benelux countries. Outside Europe: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Brazil. Coverage extends about 22 km (12 nautical miles) offshore. u-blox publishes the current map at u-blox.com/en/pointperfect-service-coverage.
